Join the Greenway STVC Program
Organizational structure around the globe
There are many workcamp organizations throughout the world. Usually, these
organizations are affiliated with the CCIVS (Coordinating Committee for
International Voluntary Service) which was founded by UNESCO (a United
Nations organization) in 1948 to assist and promote workcamps all over
the world. It publishes booklets, organizes conferences, and provides
guidelines for workcamp organizations to follow.
One
such guideline outlines how volunteers apply for workcamps. Each local
partner organization offering workcamps cooperates with national sending
organizations around the world, who act as a gateway for volunteers. No
local organization offering workcamps (such as Greenway) will accept foreign
volunteers directly. The volunteer can only be accepted by going through
the sending organization from his or her own country. For example, if
you are American, and interested in joining our camps, then you'll need
to contact your sending organization in the United States, Volunteers
for Peace.
Which camp would you like to join?
Before contacting your local sending organization, you will need to decide
which type of camp best suits your interests. There are many different
kinds of camps; environment, education, social help, construction, research
and archeology. Usually there is no special knowledge or skill required
for joining. We do expect you to be genuinely interested in the issues
that we work with, and to actively contribute to the camp. If you're looking
for a hands-off guided tour of Thailand, our program is not for you. For
a quick overview of what you can expect to find in any of our camps, click
here.
Get in touch with your sending organization
Once you've decided to join a camp, you should contact your local sending
organization, go through the necessary formalities, and pay a nominal
fee (some may call it membership, some administration or registration
fee) for outbound travel.
The sending organization will then forward your request to us and you
will be placed on our volunteer list. Please make your request as early
as possible to ensure adequate space. Many of these organizations also
hold preparation weekends that will inform you about the country, the
culture, the work and purpose of the camp. Write us an e-mail letting
us know which country you're from, and we will give you the contact information
for your local sending organization.

Participation Fee
Greenway charges a participation fee of 6,500 Thai Baht Thai for its short-term
camps (with the exception of our tsunami relief camps in Ranong). Camps
in developed countries often don't have to charge their volunteers anything
because they are subsidized by local government organizations. In Thailand,
there are no government funds available to us, so we rely on our volunteers'
participation fees to help cover our overhead costs. The rest of the fee
is used to cover the costs of running the camps. Some camps are more expensive
to run than others, so one camp may be funded partly by fees from less
costly camps.
When you join
You should
be notified soon after having made contact with your local sending organization
(and after completion of the necessary formalities, such as paying a nominal
fee for outbound traveling) whether or not there is room to place you
in the camp that you have requested.
At least one month before your workcamp is scheduled to begin, you will
be able to find detailed information sheets about that camp on this site.
You'll need still more information about traveling to and around Thailand.
